A gift should look like the person getting it

We started with one photograph, a secondhand melting pot and a kitchen that smelled like vanilla for four straight months.

Hands pouring warm soy wax into a glass jar on a sunlit wooden workbench

In late 2019, Maren wanted to give her grandmother something for her ninetieth birthday that wasn't another scarf. She had a photograph — the two of them on a porch in Astoria, 1994 — and no idea how to get it onto anything worth keeping. Printing it on a mug felt wrong. So she printed it on a candle instead, poured badly, in a jar that cracked within three burns.

Her grandmother kept the jar anyway. That is roughly the whole origin story: a badly-made thing that meant enough for someone to keep it, and a stubborn intention to make the next one properly.

What changed between then and now

Mostly the boring parts. We spent two years testing wick sizes against vessel diameters until the melt pool reliably reached the glass. We moved from a fragrance supplier who would not disclose phthalate content to one who would. We learned that photo wraps fail at the seam if the adhesive is wrong, and then we learned which adhesive is right.

The studio is now four people in a converted garage in Southeast Portland. We pour in batches of forty, print in-house, and write the gift cards by hand — which is slower than the alternative and is the reason people keep the boxes.

What we will not do

We will not print a photograph we know will look poor at scale. We will not pour into a vessel we have not burn-tested. We will not describe a fragrance as “natural” when it is a synthetic blend, because for households with cats that distinction matters more than marketing — something we wrote about at length in our pet-safe candles guide.

Our standards

100% soy, never a blend

North-American-grown soy wax with no paraffin. 'Soy blend' is an unregulated phrase and usually means mostly paraffin — we don't use it.

Phthalate-free fragrance

Every fragrance oil we buy is certified phthalate-free, and any essential oil is named on the product page so pet owners can check it.

Wicks sized per vessel

Lead-free braided cotton, tested per jar so the melt pool reaches the glass on a standard four-hour burn. No tunnelling.

A person proofs every order

Resolution, crop, spelling. If something won't print well, we email you before we pour — not after you've opened the box.

Make something personal

Start with a photograph, or with two lines of your own words. We'll take it from there.
